The ‘Digital Handbook Collection Risk Management’ software application guides the user through the methodology with a workbook and additional information. In this way, collection managers can independently analyze and manage risks. The digital handbook assists them in decision-making for collection preservation. It describes the methodology in steps, provides instruments that support the risk analysis and makes the relevant information and data available for each of the ten agents of deterioration. It thus enables the user to carry out a risk analysis with their own team.
The digital handbook includes a section with worksheets that follow the steps of the risk management process as described in the ISO 31000 standard for risk management. The information section contains the manual, background information, case study examples and a summary of information on the ten agents of deterioration. Depending on the available resources, knowledge and data, and on the level of detail required to make appropriate decisions, the user can carry out a more or less thorough risk analysis, varying from a risk matrix to a (semi)-quantitative analysis. The methodology can help find answers to questions such as ‘do we chose treatment A, B or C?’, ‘how do we perform compared to a set benchmark?’, ‘where are my priorities for collection care?’ or ‘can we reduce costs without compromising the safety of our collection?’.
